He's probably going to win the Heisman
With Labor Day weekend on the horizon, it's time to look at some of the favorites for the most prestigious awards in college sports - the Heisman Trophy!Ohio State QB CJ Stroud (+200)* is the favorite to win the award, followed by last year's winner, Alabama QB Bryce Young (+377) and USC transfer QB Caleb Williams (+690). The guy replacing Williams at Oklahoma, Dillon Gabriel (+2750) and Texas running back Bijan Robinson (+2000) round out the top-5.
Here's what to look for:
Quarterbacks have won in nine of the last 11 seasons.
A player hasn't won the award in back-to-back seasons since Archie Griffin in 1974-75.
Preseason favorites rarely win the award. Why? Pollsters often knock the favorite because they're known commodities - draft experts and media members often pick imperfections in their game, often because sustained excellence is not as interesting to talk about. Remember, this is an award voted on by people.
America loves a good mullet
Some non-favorites to look at?
Quinn Ewers, QB, Texas: If Texas is truly back this year, Ewers will get a significant amount of buzz. Plus, head coach Steve Sarkesian has a knack of developing Heisman finalists, including four at Alabama and two at USC. (+3400)
Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Alabama: The Georgia Tech transfer could light up the scoreboard for the Crimson Tide. They've had success with non-QBs in the past (Devonta Smith, Derrick Henry, and Mark Ingram, Jr. have all won the award recently), and if voters have Young fatigue, a 2,000-yard season and a #1 ranking could be enough to win the trophy. See Matt Leinhart and Reggie Bush in 2004 and '05. (+3440)
Stetson Bennett IV, QB, Georgia: He lit up Michigan and Alabama to win a natty, he's a returning starter on another national title contender, and yet he's nowhere to be found. He's got a loaded team around him, and 18 of the last 22 winners have come from top-5 teams. If the Dawgs are elite again, it could equal a well-deserved visit to NYC. (+9333)
