"Is the Big 3 Heat the GOAT team?" Mario Chalmers on untold NBA stories, myths, march madness & more

As a two-time NBA champ, Mario Chalmers has many memories to recall especially as a player who played alongside the era of the Miami Heat’s Big Three. On a recent episode of In Shambles, Chalmbers told Playmaker's very own, Garf and Polo, all the best stories of what went down during his time on the Heat.

Let’s take it back several decades ago to 2010. LeBron James just made his infamous decision to play for the Heat to link up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. It was a crazy and scary sight as those three dominated the league from 2010 to 2014.

Although the Big Three has memories of their own, Mario had his own perspective on the team too. I mean, what exactly was that like for him to be playing on a team with some Hall of Famers? What was going through his mind when he found out he would be playing on the same team as Bron?

“It's about to be fun for me,” Chalmers said. “That time was a little bit different just because that summer I had pop for ligaments of my ankle, so I was in the cast and crutches that whole summer, so I didn't get to work out with them guys at all. I got to work and watch from edition. Just seeing those guys come in, changing coach, change the atmosphere, And who? S going on? just making a better team. Making a better situation overall was just fun to sit back and watch at that time.”

Chalmers surely soaked it all in just being in the presence of the top players to ever go through the league. After all, he was teammates with an unstoppable trio. Mario even shared that he’s taking those teammates to match up against any other squad across any era whether that be the 90s or today’s current league.

There is no doubt he took notes from those three. We all can remember how he stepped up in prime time during Game 6 of the NBA Finals. As the legendary play goes, Chalmers brought the ball down the court with 19 seconds in regulation as the team is down by three.

“My job was just to get the ball down the court. I mean, it wasn't like I was being pressured or anything like that,” Mario said. “So it was just for me getting the right spot and get the ball to Bron and see what happens. He missed it and as you said, we all know what happened after that. Chris Bosh got the rebound. He had different options, but he chose Ray, so It’s okay.”

That play sent the team into OT where the Heat eventually prevailed over the Spurs 103-100 to force a Game 7.

This Miami team had legendary moments on and off the court. Even though we all know how much work this championship team put into the game, we also can tell that this squad knew how to have a lot of fun…Queue the Heat’s infamous 2012 Harlem Shake video.

“That's a classic moment that can never be repeated,” Mario said. ‘It was kind of my idea but Bron took it and ran with it. He took it to the main people and got it okay’d pretty much. But I had seen it on something I was watching. I had seen it and I showed them up like it would be funny if we do this and I was just talking because I didn't think like these guys with these personalities like Bron, CB, D Wade, Allen – like, I didn't think they'd be wanting to do something like this, but it just shows like the camaraderie we had on this team. Like we just love to have fun, like we did so much stuff just to have fun outside of basketball to the show we really cared and we really, you know, felt like we were real friends. So this was just the moment showing the fans how connected we was.”

That Heat team will surely go down in history — beyond just that iconic Harlem Shake video, of course. They were undoubtedly a force within the league, and like Mario, many NBA fans have all the mems to reminisce on one of the best eras of hoop.
